Human Resources Generalist

Job Summary

The Human Resource Generalist will run the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department including recruitment and onboarding, administering benefits and leaves, and enforcing company policies and practices; develop and drive creative HR initiatives and activities; and advise company officers in human resources policy and program matters.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years HR experience in a management or supervisory role
  • Broad background experience including performance management, recruitment, compensation, and benefits
  • Thorough knowledge of HR principles, federal and state regulations 
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel is essential

  • Knowledge of principles and procedures for recruitment, selection, onboarding, compensation and benefits, and performance management.

Work Context

In an office setting, this position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer; may be required to stand and walk regularly, and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl occasionally. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Performing the regular duties of this job, requires constant interaction with SoCal Propane management and administrators, and some interaction with clients, partners, and the public. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills through active listening and effective oral communication in person, via phone and virtually; read and interpret information; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use basic math; and learn and apply new information or skills. 

Primary Job Duties

  • Oversee and manage the Human Resources function; plan, organize, and operate its activities.
  • Perform routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Develop, administer, monitor, and update various human resources projects, such as a performance evaluation program, and revise as necessary.
  • Confer with management to recommend, develop, and implement personnel policies or procedures, and prepare and maintain the employee handbook.
  • Develop and maintain employee files, records, reports, trainings, and logs, to ensure compliance with federal, state, and industry employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
  • Recruit, interview, and facilitate the hiring and onboarding of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborate with officers and managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Conduct or acquire reference checks, background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • May investigate and report on industrial accidents for insurance carriers and represent the company at personnel-related hearings and investigations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
