Accounting Clerk

Job Summary

The Accounting Clerk is responsible for assisting with the activities of the overall general accounting function for multiple accounts. Will oversee, implement, and maintain accounting systems, procedures, and policies. This position ensures the accurate compilation, analysis and reporting of accounting data. Will compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial records complete. May also check the accuracy of figures, calculations, and postings pertaining to business transactions recorded by other workers.

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or business-related field preferred
  • CPA or MBA a plus
  • At least two (2) years of related experience
  • Experience with accounting software - QuickBooks preferred 
  • MS Office Word and Excel, data base, 10key, and calculator experience

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking, account reconciliations, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.

Work Context

In an office setting, this position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer; may be required to stand and walk regularly, and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl occasionally. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Performing the regular duties of this job, requires constant interaction with SoCal Propane management and administrators, clients, and partners, and some interaction with the public. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills through active listening and effective oral communication in person, via phone and virtually; read and interpret information; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations; use basic math; and learn and apply new information or skills. 

Primary Job Duties

  • Responsible for daily bookkeeping, general accounting, invoicing, and reconciling. 
  • Handles complete accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
  • Checks figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper codes.
  • Complies with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Debits, credits, and totals accounts on spreadsheets and accounting software.
  • Classifies, records, and summarizes numerical and financial data to compile and keep financial records, using journals and ledgers or computers.
  • Accesses computerized financial information to answer general questions as well as those related to specific accounts.
  • Operates 10-key calculators, desktop and laptop computers to perform calculations and produce documents and reports.
  • Analyses, reconciles and reports discrepancies found in records.
  • Performs financial calculations, such as amounts due, interest charges, balances, discounts, equity, and principal.
  • Perform general office duties, such as filing, answering telephones, and handling routine correspondence.
  • Receive, record, and bank cash, checks, and vouchers.
  • Scan daily check deposits and occasional trips to bank with cash deposits.
  • Match order forms with invoices and record the necessary information.
